US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that annual testosterone tests will become mandatory for eligible service members, with treatment options offered to those found to have low levels of the hormone.
According to Reuters, Hegseth said the purpose of the policy is to identify soldiers whose health and performance may be affected by testosterone deficiency and provide timely medical support.
In a video message, Hegseth explained that testosterone levels naturally decline in men with age. The hormone plays an important role in maintaining muscle strength, energy levels, physical endurance, mental alertness, and overall health. Low testosterone levels can contribute to symptoms including fatigue, weakness, reduced concentration, and decreased physical performance.
Under the new policy, soldiers diagnosed with testosterone deficiency may be offered testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). However, receiving treatment will not be compulsory, and the final decision will remain with the individual service member.
Personnel under the age of 30 will also have the option to undergo testosterone testing if they believe it is medically necessary.
The announcement comes after the US Department of Health recently indicated that some restrictions related to hormone replacement therapy for age-related testosterone deficiency could be eased.
The decision has also sparked political debate in the United States. Democratic lawmakers have accused the administration of applying a double standard, arguing that while restrictions have been placed on hormone therapy for transgender military personnel, similar treatments are now being promoted for other soldiers.
Democratic Congresswoman Summer Lee and Senator Tammy Duckworth questioned the policy, comparing it with gender-affirming healthcare and criticizing the government s approach.
However, the US Defense Secretary defended the decision, saying the policy is focused on improving soldiers combat readiness, physical capabilities, and overall health so they can perform their duties effectively.
What is Testosterone?
Testosterone is a natural hormone produced mainly in the testicles in men and in smaller amounts in women s ovaries. It plays a key role in muscle development, bone health, physical strength, energy levels, sexual health, and mental well-being.
During puberty, testosterone contributes to changes such as a deeper voice, facial and body hair growth, and increased muscle development.
Experts say testosterone levels gradually decline with age, particularly after the age of 30. However, unusually low levels may lead to symptoms such as persistent tiredness, muscle loss, weight gain, reduced concentration, weaker bones, and decreased sexual desire.
Doctors may recommend testosterone replacement therapy only after medical evaluation confirms a deficiency. Experts warn that unnecessary or improper use of testosterone treatments may increase the risk of heart problems, blood thickening, liver issues, and other side effects.
The US Department of Defense has stated that treatment under the new policy will only be offered after proper medical assessment, and accepting therapy will remain a personal choice for military personnel.
