In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the US would help guide ships safely out of restricted waters, where hundreds of vessels and thousands of seafarers have reportedly been stranded due to the conflict. He did not provide operational details of the plan.
Shortly after the announcement, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a tanker had been struck by unknown projectiles roughly 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. No casualties were reported, but the incident added to growing concerns over maritime security in the region.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it would support the mission with around 15,000 personnel, more than 100 aircraft, as well as naval assets and drones. CENTCOM described the effort as a combined diplomatic and military coordination initiative aimed at safeguarding global shipping and regional stability.
The crisis has severely disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran accused of blocking most foreign shipping while allowing limited passage for its own vessels. The disruption has contributed to sharp increases in global energy prices and supply uncertainty.
The US has also been pushing for an international coalition to secure the waterway, though it remains unclear which countries will participate or how escorts for commercial vessels will be structured.
Meanwhile, diplomatic channels between Washington and Tehran remain active. Iran said it has received a US response to its latest 14-point peace proposal via Pakistani mediators and is currently reviewing it. Pakistan has been acting as a key intermediary in discussions between the two sides.
Iran’s proposal reportedly calls for a phased approach, including lifting blockades and sanctions before addressing nuclear-related issues, while Washington has insisted that nuclear restrictions must be addressed at the outset.
Despite limited engagement, both sides remain divided over sequencing and core demands, leaving the conflict unresolved and regional tensions high.
