The incident occurred at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, held at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior officials, and hundreds of guests were present. Panic spread as attendees took cover under tables while security teams moved in.
According to initial reports, an armed individual attempted to breach a security checkpoint near the venue. Secret Service personnel opened fire and subdued the suspect before he could reach the main hall. Trump confirmed that authorities believe the attacker was acting alone.
Speaking after the incident, Trump said the situation would not deter him from ongoing geopolitical efforts, including the Iran conflict. He added that while investigators are still determining the motive, there is no clear link to international tensions at this stage.
One security officer was injured during the exchange but is reported to be out of danger. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
The event was immediately postponed, and a heavy security presence surrounded the hotel, with police and helicopters deployed. The incident has raised fresh concerns about presidential security, especially given previous assassination attempts targeting Trump in 2024.
Despite the scare, Trump said he intends to reschedule the gala within a month.
