In a brief statement released on Wednesday, Netanyahu’s office confirmed that he had accepted the U.S. president’s invitation and would participate as a member of the peace council, which is expected to include leaders from around the world.

The council was initially envisioned to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which has been devastated by more than two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas. However, the draft charter proposed by President Trump indicates that the council would be granted broader powers, enabling it to play a role in resolving armed conflicts worldwide.

According to the charter, the council will work to promote stability, restore credible systems of lawful governance, and ensure sustainable peace in regions affected by conflict or at risk of future instability.

The statement further noted that President Trump will personally chair the council, while also serving separately in his capacity as the representative of the United States.

Dozens of countries and global leaders have announced that they have received invitations to join the council, including close allies of Washington as well as some countries with which the United States has previously had strained relations.

Netanyahu’s participation in the council could prove controversial for several countries, particularly in light of ongoing proceedings against him at the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. These allegations include the use of starvation as a weapon of war and the deliberate targeting of civilians.

Similarly, Israel’s inclusion in the council may raise sensitivities for other invited countries, especially those that maintain longstanding disputes with Israel and have also been asked to participate.
