The NIA court imposed three separate prison terms on Qamar ul Zaman for different charges, the longest of which is life imprisonment. Notably, all sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve them at the same time.

In addition, the court levied a fine of Rs 5,000 for each offense. If the fines remain unpaid, Qamar-ul-Zaman will face an extra three months in prison.

The case traces back to 2017 and 2018 in the Jamnamukh area of the Hojai district, where authorities say Qamar ul Zaman attempted to establish a local module of the banned organization. Investigators revealed that the plan aimed to recruit young locals and carry out terrorist activities in Assam.

Officials described the conviction as a crucial step in dismantling militant networks in the region. ‘This verdict sends a clear signal that any attempt to foster terror and recruit vulnerable youth will face the full force of the law,’ a senior NIA officer stated.

The court’s decision reflects India’s ongoing efforts to uproot extremist plots while emphasizing the importance of local vigilance and proactive policing.
