The duo put together a stunning 401-run stand for the sixth wicket, which is now the highest partnership for any wicket from number six or lower in Test history. The previous record belonged to Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes, who added 399 runs for the sixth wicket against South Africa in 2016.

Jangoo and Chase also became only the second pair in Test history to post a 400-plus partnership for the fifth wicket or lower. The only higher such stand came in 1946, when Sid Barnes and Don Bradman added 405 runs for the fifth wicket against England.

This is also only the second time West Indies have recorded a 400-plus partnership in Test cricket. The previous instance came in 1958 when Conrad Hunte and Gary Sobers produced a 446-run second-wicket stand against Pakistan, which remains the team’s highest partnership.

Against Sri Lanka as well, this is only the second occasion a partnership of 400 or more has been recorded in Tests. Earlier in 1991, Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones had stitched together a 467-run stand against Sri Lanka.

Thanks to this historic partnership, West Indies posted their highest-ever Test total against Sri Lanka, reaching 626 for 9 in the first innings, surpassing their previous best of 580 in 2010.

It is also the first time since December 2013 that West Indies have crossed 500 runs in a Test innings, and the first time since November 2012 that they have gone past 600.

Jangoo scored a brilliant 233, while Chase contributed 194 in a dominant batting display.

Sri Lanka were earlier bowled out for 308 in their first innings, before West Indies piled up 626 in response in the opening Test of the two-match series.
