The incident occurred when Agha, standing short of his crease at the non-striker’s end, bent down to pick up the ball to return it to a Bangladesh bowler after his teammate Mohammad Rizwan had driven the ball in his direction. At that moment, Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz moved behind Agha, collected the ball and broke the stumps, resulting in Agha being run out and sparking debate over the spirit of the game.
Following the dismissal, an upset Agha threw down his gloves and helmet in frustration. The ICC later confirmed that the reaction violated its Code of Conduct related to the abuse of equipment during an international match and issued him one demerit point.
Speaking after the match, Mehidy Hasan Miraz explained that he expected Agha might attempt to take a run. He said Agha was away from the crease and he was simply trying to field the ball, adding that if the batter had tried to run, he would have been prepared for it.
Despite the controversy, Pakistan secured a convincing 128-run victory in the match, leveling the three-match ODI series at 1-1. The series-deciding third ODI was scheduled to be played later on Sunday.
