Earlier, researchers believed that lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, and social connections held the key to a long life. But a new study published in the journal Science suggests that genes play a far more significant role than previously thought. In fact, genetics may be twice as influential as earlier estimates indicated.
The research shows that longevity depends on a complex interplay of factors, including cholesterol levels, bone health, and other biological markers. Genes quietly set the framework for how long a person is likely to live, while lifestyle influences how smoothly that life unfolds.
Previous studies often underestimated the impact of genetics, relying heavily on data from people born before the 19th century. Back then, infectious diseases, accidents, and limited medical care often cut lives short, making it difficult to gauge the true role of genes.
The latest study finds that about 55 percent of a person’s lifespan is predetermined by genetics, while the remaining 45 percent is influenced by lifestyle, environment, and chance.
Lifestyle still matters, researchers note. Healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and strong social ties can add or subtract around five years to a person’s life. For example, someone with a genetic lifespan of 80 years could extend it to 85 with good habits, or reduce it to 75 through unhealthy choices.
However, scientists caution that no amount of healthy living can completely override genetic limits. ‘Genes set the boundaries,’ said the lead researcher. ‘Healthy habits help you reach the top of your genetic potential, but they cannot stretch an 80 year lifespan to 100.’
The study underscores an important message, while good habits improve health and quality of life, they work best within the framework of our genetic blueprint. Understanding the role of genes allows scientists and individuals to focus on both nature and nurture in the quest for longevity.
