This subtle stimulation, the company claims, activates specific neural pathways in the brain, helping wearers feel more present and grounded, particularly in high pressure situations.

Matthew Nurse, Nike’s Chief Science Officer, told reporters, ‘We aim to explore the connection between mind and body in a new way. It’s not just about running faster, it’s about being fully in the moment, more confident, and sharper mentally.’

The Mind 001 is a slide-on model designed for comfort, while Mind 002 is a sneaker providing stronger sensory feedback. Nike says their designs are based on careful testing, including the ‘toe point discrimination’ test, which measures foot sensitivity. The foam nodes are positioned on the most sensitive areas of the foot to maximize the sensory experience.

Despite the hype, neuroscientists remain cautious. Dr. Atim Sarkar, Professor of Neurosurgery at Drexel University, says, ‘Shoes can change how your feet feel and move, but that’s far from improving mental focus. More sensation doesn’t automatically mean better concentration sometimes it can even overload the brain.’

Experts warn that while foot stimulation might activate some areas of the brain, complex networks and chemicals like dopamine are what truly govern focus and attention. Some studies show light sensory stimulation may slightly improve focus in very specific situations, such as balance training in older adults, but these effects are limited and far from universal.

Nike’s Mind series is now available starting at £79.99. While the company markets the shoes as tools for both physical and mental performance, scientists emphasize that the current evidence falls short of confirming the brain-boosting claims.
