Unlike conventional trees, which can take years to mature and effectively absorb pollutants, the newly developed liquid tree can purify the air at a rate equivalent to up to 50 mature trees, according to researchers involved in the project.

The technology, developed through a collaboration between the Punjab Environment Department and a private research organization in Faisalabad, replicates the natural process of photosynthesis inside a glass container.

The system uses high-tech pumps to draw in polluted air and smog particles from the surrounding environment. These pollutants are then directed into a water-filled chamber containing microalgae, which absorb carbon dioxide and other harmful gases as a food source. In return, the algae release significant amounts of oxygen back into the atmosphere.

Following successful experimental trials, the Punjab government is considering deploying the technology as part of its efforts to tackle environmental pollution.

Experts involved in the project said a liquid tree can be produced within 15 to 20 days. Smaller units are capable of providing air-cleaning benefits comparable to 25 trees, while larger units can match the performance of up to 50 trees. Researchers added that continuous light exposure can further enhance the system’s efficiency.

The project has also received approval from the Punjab Environmental Protection Department, which has issued a certification following a review of the trial results.

The development comes as Pakistan continues to face severe air quality challenges, particularly during the winter smog season, prompting authorities to explore innovative solutions for reducing pollution levels in urban areas.
