The Paris prosecutor’s cyber-crime unit is investigating X over alleged offences linked to content moderation, algorithmic recommendations, and the use of its AI chatbot Grok, including concerns about deepfake images and harmful content.
Authorities said Musk had been asked to appear on 20 April as part of a probe that began in 2025 and was later expanded. The investigation includes allegations such as complicity in distributing illegal content, privacy violations involving sexual deepfakes, and suspected fraudulent data practices.
French prosecutors confirmed that the absence of summoned individuals does not halt the investigation. Musk has not publicly appeared in the proceedings and previously described the probe as a “political attack.”
The case follows earlier actions by French authorities, including a February raid on X’s Paris offices as part of the wider investigation into the platform’s content systems.
X has denied wrongdoing, calling the allegations “baseless” and claiming the investigation undermines free speech protections. French authorities, however, maintain that the probe is ongoing and expanding.
The development adds to increasing global scrutiny of Musk’s companies, particularly regarding AI-generated content, platform moderation, and regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
