OpenAI has introduced group messaging to ChatGPT, a move that could transform this AI chatbot into a full fledged social platform.
With this feature, multiple people can join a single conversation, while the AI acts as a guiding companion, helping participants navigate discussions smoothly. This is the company’s first step toward enabling office teams, friends, and family to collaborate seamlessly in one space.
For now, the feature is rolling out in just four countries: Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. It is expected to expand to other parts of the world in the coming months.
Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has focused on one-on-one AI chats. But now, it is stepping into the social platform arena. The addition of direct messaging will redefine the ChatGPT experience, allowing users not only to interact with AI but also to connect, collaborate, and share ideas with others.
In ChatGPT group messaging, up to 20 people can participate. Each member can also engage in private one-on-one chats within the group threads, invisible to others. Every participant will have their own profile, username, and profile picture, making it easy to see who sent each message. Users can react to messages with emojis for a touch of fun and clarity.
Group admins will manage membership, while individual users can mute notifications or rename the chat. The feature runs on the GPT 5.1 Auto AI model, ensuring top tier responses for both free and subscription users.
All major ChatGPT tools, including web search, image generation, file uploads, and sharing, will be available within group chats, creating a rich, interactive workspace for everyone.
