In the rapidly evolving era of artificial intelligence, researchers are exploring new ways to accelerate the development of medicines for brain and nervous system diseases. Scientists believe AI can help identify effective treatments for conditions that have long remained difficult to manage.
Researchers at the Edinburgh Centre of the UK Dementia Research Institute are analyzing patient data, including voice recordings and eye scans, to determine whether existing medicines could help treat neurological conditions such as motor neuron disease.
One participant in the research, Steve Barrett, has been living with motor neuron disease for the past 10 years. He said the illness gradually takes away a person’s identity and hope for the future.
Barrett explained that participating in the research is not only about receiving treatment for himself but also about contributing to discoveries that may benefit future patients even if they do not help him directly.
Scientists are using artificial intelligence to identify potentially effective medicines, which are then tested through robots, medical devices, and advanced computer algorithms at different stages of research.
Professor Siddharthan Chandran, Chief Executive of the institute, said that some medicines originally designed for other diseases may also prove effective for neurological disorders, although researchers may not yet be aware of their potential.
He explained that the human brain is the most complex organ in the body, but artificial intelligence and modern technologies have opened research possibilities that seemed unimaginable only a few years ago.
Experts say developing a new medicine and bringing it to market usually takes 10 years or more. However, AI could significantly speed up the process and help effective treatments reach patients sooner.
Professor Chandran added that neurological disease research is standing on the edge of a major transformation, with artificial intelligence expected to play a central role in that change.
