The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance was held under the chairmanship of Senator Saleem Mandviwalla.

During the session, Senator Kamil Ali Agha proposed the abolition of fixed taxes on electricity bills, stating that fixed charges have become a burden for the public. He said that even his own lodge units, valued at Rs 6,200, were being charged Rs 6,800 in fixed charges.

He further remarked that it has now been revealed that a person earning Rs 8,500 is not considered poor.

In response, Committee Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla said that this effectively means one should disconnect their electricity connection.

Kamil Ali Agha added that a person using 100 units is being charged for 400 units, calling fixed charges unjust and urging the committee to recommend their removal.

Saleem Mandviwalla stated that after the budget, the Power Division will be summoned and questioned on the matter.
