Marking this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” both leaders stressed the importance of responsible journalism, truth, and credible information in strengthening democracy, national unity, and a supportive environment for media freedom.
In his message, President Zardari extended greetings to media professionals worldwide and warned of increasing threats to press freedom, including misinformation, disinformation, misuse of artificial intelligence, algorithmic manipulation, and pressure from powerful digital platforms. He said these factors risk distorting public discourse and undermining democratic values.
Reaffirming constitutional guarantees under Articles 19 and 19-A, the president stated that a free press remains essential for accountability, transparency, and democratic governance. He noted that peace depends on truth, and truth relies on courageous journalism.
He also emphasised that press freedom must be exercised responsibly, cautioning that accuracy should not be sacrificed for speed and that balance must not give way to partisanship. He described public trust as the most valuable asset of journalism.
Referring to Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, Zardari praised the media’s role in countering false narratives and maintaining national cohesion. He paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty and called for stronger protections and safer working conditions for media professionals. He also urged citizens to reject falsehood and support credible journalism, while calling on governments to ensure enabling laws for the media sector.
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid tribute to journalists globally, describing journalism as vital for building an informed society. He underscored that authentic, unbiased, and verified reporting forms the foundation of credible journalism.
The prime minister urged media professionals to counter propaganda, fake news, and unverified content, noting that responsible journalism contributes to peace by shaping informed public opinion and strengthening international understanding.
Highlighting the impact of digital transformation, he stressed the need for journalists to adapt while maintaining professional ethics and credibility. He warned against the rise of disinformation campaigns and called for strict adherence to verification and integrity.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Shehbaz Sharif said efforts would continue to ensure a safe and enabling environment for press freedom, adding that media can play a constructive role in enhancing international relations, economic cooperation, and social harmony.
