According to renowned oncologist Dr. Ravi Gupta, the belief that Limca or any fizzy drink aids digestion is nothing more than a well polished misconception a myth wrapped in bubbles.
Dr. Gupta explains that the moment a soft drink enters the stomach, something unexpected happens. The stomach’s delicate vessels tighten on reflex, digestive enzymes slow down, and the natural breakdown of food loses its rhythm.
In other words, the relief feels real, but the science says otherwise. Many people do feel a brief wave of calm after drinking a cold soda. But Dr. Gupta calls it a ‘false window of comfort.’ The drink’s gas expands in the stomach, triggers a belch, and tricks the mind into thinking the discomfort has drifted away.
But the underlying problem remains untouched and unresolved. Within minutes, this short-lived relief often turns into, heavier bloating, sharper acidity, and a stomach that feels like it has lost its balance. Dr. Gupta also highlights a detail that often slips under the radar, a single can of soft drink carries 6 to 10 teaspoons of sugar an amount he calls ‘alarmingly excessive for the human system.’
The presence of phosphoric acid
adds another layer of trouble. It weakens good gut bacteria, fuels acid reflux,
and triggers long-term digestive issues.
In simple words: the problem doesn’t shrink it snowballs.
Rather than reaching for a fizzy shortcut, Dr. Gupta recommends turning to gentle, time-tested remedies that soothe the stomach without side effects:
· Ajwain water
· Cumin (zeera) water
· Warm water
· Light, easy-to-digest meals
· Avoiding oily or heavily spiced foods
These choices don’t just reduce discomfort, they help the stomach regain its natural rhythm.
