While families gather in their homes, sharing laughter and meals, many expatriates spend the day in quiet rooms far from their loved ones, connected only through video calls and messages.
Across the globe, overseas Pakistanis and other migrant communities leave their homelands in pursuit of better opportunities and financial stability for their families. Yet, this journey often comes at a personal cost. On festive occasions like Eid, the absence of loved ones is felt most strongly. Seeing family members on a screen can bring momentary comfort, but it cannot replace the warmth of a real embrace.
Memories of home childhood streets, family traditions, and especially a mother’s affection become more vivid during such times. A glimpse of a smiling sibling, a spouse’s silent complaints, or children dressed in new clothes can stir both joy and heartache.
For some, however, unexpected moments turn longing into unforgettable happiness. Last year, an initiative in the United Arab Emirates brought such joy to several workers. Among them was 39-year-old Nazir Hussain from Bangladesh, who had spent six consecutive Eids away from his family. Through a special program offering free travel tickets, he was given the chance to return home.
Recalling the moment, Hussain said he could hardly believe it until he boarded the plane. The mixture of disbelief and excitement made his heart race. When he surprised his family, the emotional reunion was overwhelming. His two sons ran toward him and embraced him tightly a moment he described as unforgettable. He spent an entire month with his family, making up for years of missed celebrations.
Stories like these highlight the dual reality of Eid in exile, a blend of hope and hardship, joy and longing. While migrants continue striving for a better future, their hearts remain tied to the homes they left behind especially on days meant for togetherness.
Eid, after all, is not just about celebration, it is about connection, and for those far away, that connection is felt most deeply in its absence.
