Today, as machines begin to think, that question has emerged once again:
Who will hold power in the next era?
If human history could be summarized in a single sentence, it would be this: The world is ultimately led by those who lead in knowledge.
History has consistently demonstrated that nations which achieve intellectual and scientific supremacy eventually gain the power to shape the destiny of others.
And in the third decade of the twenty-first century, that intellectual supremacy has a name: Artificial Intelligence (AI). The question today is no longer whether AI will transform the world.
The real question is:
Who will use AI to rule it?
If we look into the mirror of history, we find that when Britain harnessed the steam engine, it soon emerged as the world s dominant power. When nuclear weapons arrived, global leadership became concentrated in the hands of the United States and the Soviet Union.
Today, a technology far more consequential and potentially more dangerous has emerged in the form of AI.
It has rapidly become a strategic asset for every nation on earth. Even in recent conflicts involving Iran and the United States, we witnessed how AI-powered technologies influenced intelligence gathering, targeting, and modern warfare.
Across the globe, countries are racing relentlessly to outpace one another in this new technological arena.
The United States is investing heavily in AI systems such as ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, and numerous other advanced models. China, meanwhile, is pouring resources into DeepSeek, Moonshot, Baidu, and a growing ecosystem of domestic AI technologies. Russia, too, appears determined to secure a leadership position in this field.
What will the future look like?
If we examine both historical patterns and present realities, several scenarios appear increasingly plausible. Scenario One, The Rise of a Single AI Superpower
If either the United States or China achieves a decisive technological advantage, the world by 2050 could effectively be dominated by a single power. But this dominance would not be enforced through armies alone. It would be exercised through artificial intelligence.
Banks, hospitals, schools, communication networks, and defense systems around the world would operate on software platforms and AI infrastructure developed by companies from that dominant nation.
This would be a silent yet profound form of geopolitical conquest one fought not with missiles and tanks, but with algorithms, data centers, and digital ecosystems.
Scenario Two: A Divided Digital World
If neither side gains a decisive advantage, the most likely outcome may be the emergence of two rival technological blocs. On one side would stand the American internet, software standards, and AI systems.
On the other would be China s parallel digital universe, complete with its own platforms, networks, and technological architecture. Countries such as Pakistan, along with much of the developing world, could find themselves compelled to align with one camp or the other. It would resemble the Cold War of the twentieth century.
The difference is that this time the competition would not revolve around nuclear arsenals. Instead, it would center on neural networks, computing power, data dominance, and artificial intelligence.
Scenario Three: A Multipolar AI Order
There is, however, another possibility. Europe, India, Brazil, African nations, and other emerging powers could develop their own technological ecosystems. Open-source AI could flourish, preventing any single country or corporation from monopolizing the world s knowledge, intelligence, and information.
This would arguably represent the most desirable future. Yet achieving such a balance would require unprecedented cooperation among smaller and middle powers a difficult prospect when judged against the lessons of history.
AI, War, and the Future of Freedom
A review of history reveals a troubling pattern: Every major technological revolution has made warfare more destructive. The future of AI appears likely to follow a similar trajectory.
While nations are integrating AI into increasingly sophisticated weapons systems, authoritarian and semi-authoritarian regimes are simultaneously employing it to expand surveillance and restrict fundamental freedoms.
This revives an enduring historical debate:
Does technology strengthen democracy or empower authoritarianism?
During the early days of the internet, many experts viewed it as a force for liberation. The Arab Spring appeared to validate that belief. Social media helped organize protests and political movements across countries such as Egypt and Libya. But history took a more complicated turn.
China built the Great Firewall and succeeded in exerting extensive control over the internet within its borders. Russia transformed social media into a battleground of information warfare and disinformation.
And during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, digitally driven propaganda campaigns exposed vulnerabilities at the very heart of democratic systems. Today, AI is increasingly becoming one of the most powerful tools available to authoritarian governments.
The facial-recognition systems deployed on the streets of Beijing today may appear in Moscow tomorrow and could eventually become commonplace in cities such as Karachi and Lahore as well.
Deepfake technology can fabricate speeches, manufacture scandals, and produce convincing but entirely fictional realities. Around the world, AI-generated political content is already becoming a significant factor in public discourse and electoral politics.
The question is:
Can democracy withstand this challenge?
Perhaps, But only if democratic societies move just as rapidly to establish ethical safeguards, transparent regulations, and accountable institutions as AI itself advances. Whether that can be achieved remains uncertain. Some would argue it may prove extraordinarily difficult perhaps even impossible.
